Extra Days, Extra Slaps, Extra Bones? Name Your Own Holiday March 26!

We're not sure about that No-Consequence Slap Day thing.

What Holiday Would YOU Create?

March 26 is National Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. Admit it, you’ve thought about things that should be a holiday but aren’t. So make it up for March 26th! Here’s what the TJM staff came up with for Should-Be Holidays:

Shannon Moore: National Bone Day

There isn’t a lot out there (that I’ve heard of) for bone ailment awareness. Things like bone cancer, bone density, bone disease, etc. There is extensive support for  other health-related topics including various cancers, thyroid diseases, weight issues (both loss and gain), pregnancy-related issues and the list goes on. It would be nice to be able to have more information and support for those that do suffer from things osteo related.

In terms of appreciation, our skeletal system is AMAZING. According to Discovery, it takes about 4,000 newtons of force to break the typical human femur. In ordinary soil, a bone can take 8 to 12 years to decompose. If buried in a coffin or other container it can take even longer. According to npr.org, some of the oldest bones found were aged at about 233,000 years old. They can symbolize the ending and finality of something, but also the beginning for those that believe in the afterlife. I. love. bones.

 Matt Fischer: The Days After

My holiday is actually six in one – called “The Days After,” and they would all come after “The Standard Six.” It would provide an extra day after New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Let’s be honest, expanding these existing holidays and having that extra day to unwind, recover, clean up, or just have some more time to yourself would be welcomed.

Justin MacDonald: National No-Consequence Free Slap Day

You get to choose ONE person to open-hand slap. You must know them personally and slap power has to be consistent with the height and weight of the target. You’re not trying to hurt them physically, just emotionally. No explanation can be given, the target just has to contemplate what may have prompted you to smack them.

(Editor’s Note: When we expressed a bit of concern about this day to Justin, his response was “See, it’s working already.”  Hmmm….)

Rick Cundiff: James Murray Spangler Day

I have to go with James Murray Spangler Day. You might not know his name, but he made your home, your office and just about every building you go into cleaner..

Spangler, who was asthmatic, was working as a janitor at a department store in Canton, Ohio in the early 1900s. Sweeping the dust from the carpets with an old-fashioned carpet sweeper made his asthma worse, so he decided to find a better way.

In 1907, he found it. He put together an electric fan, a soapbox, a broom handle and a pillowcase. Presto! The home vacuum cleaner was born.

Later, he showed the machine to his cousin – Susan Hoover – and her husband. In 1908, Mr. Hoover backed production, put his name on the product, and the company cleaned up.

Chance Miller: National Tip a Creative Person Day

Almost everything we visually and audibly consume, a creative person of some kind has touched. So what better way to show your appreciation for the people that keep life colorful and entertaining than to throw some cash their way?

A close second national holiday would be National Nap Day,  but that might be because I need one right about now. (Editor’s note: You’re in luck, Chance! National Napping Day is already a thing, and it’s coming up on March 14th!)
