Promotional Products are changing. Here's what's trending this year.

Ah, the new year, bright with possibilities for your business success. Keeping up with the latest trends is one key to maximizing your marketing potential.

The Importance of Integration

To truly succeed in today’s marketplace, you need a multifaceted approach to marketing. Social media is a must, of course. TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms are where your customers are. Meet them there with a curated feed of posts about your business, your products and special events.

That’s not to say however, that other media aren’t critical too. Today’s customers expect you to have a website, and usually online ordering. Show your potential buyers you’re part of their community.

Promotional products also are a time-tested way to get your name in front of customers, in ways they appreciate. Custom promos fit into your integrated marketing plan as a way to get your brand and contact information directly into your customers’ hands. Let’s check out some of the things your buyers will be looking for in promotional items this year.

 Sustainability

Consumers today are more environmentally aware than ever before. “Reduce, reuse, recycle” is more than a slogan. It’s a way of life for many people. Cheap, disposable promo items just won’t fly with eco-conscious buyers. They want durable, well-designed products that will last.

Products made with natural and/or recycled materials also appeal to these customers. If you want to reach them, go for products such as tote bags, drinkware and other items that can be used over and over.

Utility

Related to that, today’s consumers want usable, practical products. Cheap novelties don’t cut it any more. Give your potential buyers and clients something they can use.

It doesn’t have to be fancy. Water bottles, coffee mugs, pens (not the cheap throwaways), and good notebooks are always welcome.

Hgher Quality

Savvy consumers don’t just expect higher quality merchandise today. They demand it. A cheap, low quality product that doesn’t last reflects badly on your organization’s reputation “Fast fashion”-type apparel might be affordable, but it quickly becomes disposable, while a better custom tee or polo that costs just a little bit more can last for years. As the product goes, so goes your business. Don’t buy cheap junk. Find a reputable provider who offers better merchandise at a fair price.

The key is to choose quality over quantity. Sure, a good double-walled, vacuum insulated tumbler with a laser engraved logo will cost a bit more than a plastic one with an imprint. But which one do you think your customer, client or employee will regard more highly? Especially with potential new customers, first impressions matter. Be strategic in who you present products to, and go for higher quality.

Product Categories

Wellness/Personal Care

Today’s customers are increasingly aware of wellness concepts. This is a category you don’t have to spend a lot in to get good results. Custom imprinted hand sanitizer, lip balm, sleep masks and other such products are a low cost way to make a positive impression on an audience that appreciates your concern for their health. Custom printed water bottles, sunscreen and first aid kits are also welcome choices.

Technology

In our ever-increasingly digital world, tech accessories are always a popular promotional item. If your customer’s phone battery is running low on a business trip, you can bet they’ll appreciate a power bank imprinted with your name and logo. Solve a problem for them and they’ll be more inclined to respond favorably to your product or service.

Flash drives are an outstanding tech giveaway. In addition to your logo and contact info printed on the outside, you can include a digital promotion on the drive itself. Just be sure to leave plenty of room, or make your message erasable, to give the customer space to store that presentation they need for the big meeting.

One benefit of tech products is that it’s such a versatile category. You can go with economical products such as the two examples above. If you have a major client or prospect, or if you want a gift for your own executive staff, you can go for higher end products such as noise canceling headphones, earbuds, or even tablets and laptops.

Classics

Some products transcend trendiness, becoming timeless promotional classics that just about everyone appreciates. They continue to grow in popularity year after year. Examples include:

Apparel

Tees, polos, hoodies and quarter-zips are perpetual winners. They’re a way to reward your employees for their service and dedication while promoting your brand to customers everywhere you go. The key, as always, is quality. Choose a good supplier and you’ll be all set.

Drinkware

More people are aware of the importance of staying hydrated on the job than ever before. The market for custom tumblers and water bottles is expanding at an exponential rate. A well-made vacuum-insulated tumbler can keep drinks cold or hot throughout an entire workday. With your logo imprinted on them, they broadcast your brand every time someone walks by a desk or work station.

The classic coffee or tea mug has its place too, of course. For some, there’s just no substitute for drinking a hot beverage. Couple an imprinted mug with an electric warmer and you have a way to keep their beverage hot throughout the day too.

Pens

Despite the promise of the digital age to usher in a “paperless office,” it hasn’t happened yet. People still need to sign documents, write journals, jot Post-It® notes and more. That why pens continue to be a popular promotional item.

But not just any pen. The cheap, disposable single-use ballpoints of yesteryear have no place in today’s more sustainable ecosystem. Pens still make a great, low-cost, high-impact promo, but must adapt to the times.

That means refillable pens, in an attractive, comfortable housing. A good writing instrument doesn’t have to cost a lot to be useful. Give your customers pens they can continue to use after the initial ink runs out. Ballpoints are still popular, but you might also consider roller ball or gel inks as well. The key is to give people a pen that they can see and feel has value.

Putting It All Together

What all these trends show is that the promotional products which people appreciate and want to receive are those that offer them useful value. The simple giveaway items of years past don’t work today. If you want to make a positive impression, commit to giving potential customers something relevant to their lives.

Show them that you value their business, and by extension that you value what matters to them. Eco-positive products say your business appreciates their concerns for the environment and sustainability. Attractive, durable products show you value quality, an impression that carries over to your products and services.
