AMERICA

Nothing says "America" like __ __." There are quite a few answers to this question, but we decided to put together some of the top things that come to mind about our great country.

Baseball
Baseball – Was there any question America's Pastime would be on this list? While there's some debate on where the sport began, it's generally accepted that Abner Doubleday invented the modern version of the sport in the early 19th century.

There's no questioning the popularity of the sport these days, with 30 teams in the major leagues. Even though there's only one international team (Toronto) in Major League Baseball, we still declare the winner as world champion. That's right, America.

Apple Pie
Apple Pie – You really can't go wrong with an apple pie, can you? Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

Brought to the United States by the Dutch, British, and Swedes in the 16th and 17th centuries, the apple pie wasn't hugely popular until apple tree crops grew in larger quantities here. For that, we have another true American to thank: Johnny Appleseed. Thanks Johnny, we appreciate it.

Fireworks 2
Fireworks – OK sure, we might not be the only country that celebrates with fireworks. But you can't deny we have some of the best fireworks around. From huge pyrotechnic shows at nearly every major sporting event or concert to the fireworks stands that spring up on every street corner around Independence Day or New Year's Day, we've got it all. By the rockets' red glare!

Moon Landing
Walking on the Moon – When it comes to manned lunar landings, the United States is 6 for 7. The first, Apollo 11, inspired not only the U.S., but the world. And the one manned mission that went wrong still managed to bring everyone home, using good, old-fashioned American ingenuity. While we weren't the first country in space, the American flag remains the only flag raised by a human being on the moon. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!

Rock Concert
Rock and Roll – Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Nirvana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles…need we go on? While we can't lay claim to EVERY famous rock band out there, America is certainly where the music began. From the birth of rock and roll in the 1950s, to Woodstock in the '60s, Live Aid in the '80s, and the huge concerts/festivals of today, America is home to some great music. Let us know who you think the best American rock band is in the comments! (We're sure this will end well.)

These are just a few of the things which make America great. What else makes you proud to live in the U.S.A.? Comment away!
